STA offers a complete service to automatic transmission problems. From a simple diagnostic test, to removal, rebuilding and refitting a transmission, our technicians have the knowledge, experience and ability to get you back on the road in the shortest time as possible. When it comes to customer service, we have a reputation for talking in plain English and fully explaining our proposed solution including accurate and competitive costs, which includes labour, transmission fluid, computer rests and aftercare.
So how do you know if the transmission has a problem? Loss of drive is an obvious sign that your transmission has developed a serious problem, but it could be as simple as low fluid level. There are more subtle indications that all is not right, such as the warning light on the dashboard, or different ‘feel’ to the way the gearbox normally operates.
When a transmission warning light appears on your dash, it means there is a problem, which should be investigated as soon as possible; ignoring a warning light can mean further damage is caused to the unit which could end up costing you more in the long run. It may be something as simple as a sensor or it could mean the transmission has reached the end of its life. How do you tell? The first step is to have diagnostics carried out on the car to see what fault codes have been recorded in the computer, which will tell us what the likely problem is. This is then followed by a test drive to gain more insight in to what’s actually happening on the road. Our 35 years of experience means we can give you a quick and accurate diagnosis of your transmission’s problem, and what it will take to fix it.
All our rebuilds follow the same procedure: Complete disassembly of all the component parts, followed by a solvent and hot chemical wash. Parts are then inspected for wear or damage before being placed in a clean area for reassembly. During the rebuilding process, gaskets, seals, filter and friction material are commonly replaced after which the unit is reassembled as close to the original specification as possible. In addition to the normal rebuild, we have facilities to refinish parts and carry out propriety modifications as and when required, which are intended to alleviate recognised design shortcomings.
Modern cars have introduced more and more electronics in to the management of the transmission and how it performs. This electronic system increases mileage, lowers emission and improves the driving experience. In order to be competent with these new systems we have invested in the latest diagnostic and calibration machine, which runs the control unit through a series of tests and applications much in the same way as if it were in the vehicle and on the road. The results are graphed and compared to a table of standard data, so that any variations or anomalies are identified and can be corrected.
